Garden Of Wellness is a full-service Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic
serving Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley. Founded by
Beatrice Moncrief, M.S., LAc. The clinic treats many types of conditions,
encompassing physical as well as emotional imbalances. Beatrice
Moncrief has helped many patients with various types of disorders
improve their health and wellbeing. See the Services page for a list of
illnesses treatable with acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
How Does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is based on the ancient Eastern concept
of yin and yang as it relates to the human body. In
addition to the nerves and blood vessels, our body
has a system of vessels that carry a very subtle
energy, the Qi energy. The vessels are called the
meridians, and the Qi energy is actually life force
energy or bio-electric energy, which is carried to all
parts of the body.
Illness and disease often result when Qi energy is
blocked and imbalances are created in the flow of
energy through the meridians. Acupuncture releases
these blockages.

Acupuncture manipulates this Qi energy by inserting needles into acupuncture
points. These points are located where the Qi of the meridians comes to the
body’s surface and can be accessed and manipulated. Treating these points can
resolve obstructions and accumulations, which manifest as pain or illness.
Acupuncture can stimulate the Qi flow, which will bring energy and circulation to
a weak body part and redirect Qi that does not flow to where it is intended. The
results can be subtle or dramatic. The response varies from patient to patient
depending on their overall health and constitution. The point is to balance Qi for
optimum health and wellbeing.
Determining The Treatment Protocol
With acupuncture, the number of treatments necessary to improve a patient's
health, energy and feeling of well-being is different for each person and also
depends on the different types of conditions, as well as the state of the patient's
overall health and energy. Because we are working with your body's own energy
to enable healing, the frequency and intensity of the treatment vary from person
to person. Generally speaking, patients should expect to receive 5-10 treatments
to allow the protocol to take effect. Some patients might feel immediate
improvement with the first treatment. With serious conditions or chronic cases,
the patient might need to receive acupuncture for a longer period of time. The
rule of thumb is the longer the patient had the condition and the more serious,
the more treatments might be required. Acupuncture treatments are cumulative.
Over time the patients will need less frequent treatments as their health improves.
Many patients experience improvement with weekly treatments. After health has
been optimized, a monthly "tune-up" treatment is often advisable. Even when
patients feel relatively healthy, everyone is encouraged to come at least once a
quarter as the seasons change to improve their overall energy level and
strengthen the immune system.
Needling and Acupuncture Needles
At Garden of Wellness we are using sterile, disposable acupuncture needles.
Because the needles are so thin the insertion is mostly painless. The Qi sensation
(the activation of the meridian) can be felt like a small pinch followed by a
sensation of tingling or mild pressure. During the treatment the needles remain in
place for about twenty to thirty minutes, while the patient rests. This usually feels
very relaxing and most people are pleased to find that sessions are not
uncomfortable and even look forward to them. Some even take naps during their
sessions.
The Role Of Herbs
Chinese herbalism applies the energetic properties of the herbs and their
directionality which is different from Western herbalism. What does this mean?
For example there are herbs that are predominantly warming like cinnamon or
cooling like mint. According to the treatment principles cinnamon would be
prescribed to a patient who has been exposed to cold, like wise mint would be
prescribed if cooling is needed. In addition, every herb has directionality. This
means, it might send energy up to the head, or down to the feet, or to a specific
organ. All that is taken into account when formulating an herbal remedy in
Chinese medicine. Western herbalism is symptom based, however the
symptoms that appear to be the same might have different origins and should not
be treated with the same herbs. Classic formulas in pill or powder form are
available at Garden of Wellness as well as custom formulas specifically formulated
for individual needs.
